Description

The OUTEQ CR2 turns the wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in your car into wireless. Just plug it into the USB port and pair it with your phone, with no modification to the car's electronics and no app to install. You can then use navigation, music and calls without a cable, and every time you start the car again, the phone connects on its own.

Key features

  • Wired to wireless: plug it into the USB port and CarPlay and Android Auto work without a cable and without modifying the car's electronics.
  • Automatic connection: after the first pairing, the phone connects on its own every time you start the car, as long as Bluetooth and WiFi are on.
  • Dual-band WiFi and Bluetooth 5.3: two WiFi bands (2.4 and 5.8 GHz) and Bluetooth 5.3 help keep video and audio transmission stable.
  • Aluminium body with tempered glass: the metal construction helps draw heat away from the electronics inside the adapter.
  • Firmware updates via the web: new firmware is uploaded through the web interface at 192.168.18.9, with no app to install.

Features

From factory cable to wireless

Cars with factory wired Apple CarPlay or Android Auto already have the necessary electronics built in and lack only a wireless link to the phone. The CR2 plugs into the USB port you currently use to connect your phone, and from that moment picture, sound and controls run without a cable. The prerequisite is a car that genuinely has factory wired CarPlay or Android Auto, which typically means models with this equipment from roughly 2015 onwards. If the car has neither CarPlay nor Android Auto, the adapter cannot add them. On the phone side it works with an iPhone 6 or newer running iOS 10 or higher, and with phones running Android 12 or higher, such as Google Pixel, Samsung Galaxy, LG or OnePlus.

Pairing and automatic connection

The first connection runs over Bluetooth, as the phone and adapter find each other and pair. After pairing, the adapter creates its own WiFi network, the phone connects to it, and CarPlay or Android Auto picture and sound then run over that network. Bluetooth disconnects in the process, which is normal behaviour, not a fault. On subsequent journeys you do not need to pair again; just keep WiFi and Bluetooth on in your phone and the adapter connects on its own once you start the engine. That helps most with daily commuting, when the phone stays in your pocket or in a holder and there is no need to connect it by cable after you get in.

Auto-reconnectBluetooth 5.3WiFi 2.4/5.8 GHz

A stable connection over dual-band WiFi and Bluetooth 5.3

The adapter establishes the connection with the phone over Bluetooth 5.3 and then transmits picture and sound over WiFi on two bands, 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz. The 2.4 GHz band is shared by a great many devices, from phones to the WiFi networks of nearby buildings, and therefore tends to be congested. The 5.8 GHz band is less crowded and has higher data throughput, leaving a larger margin for transmitting picture and sound. The difference shows most in places with heavy interference, for example in built-up urban areas or in a traffic queue among other vehicles. The adapter's own WiFi network supports both WPA2 and the newer WPA3-SAE encryption.

Aluminium body and tempered glass

The adapter body is made of aluminium alloy and its top face is covered with tempered glass, beneath which sits the indicator LED. Aluminium conducts heat better than plastic, and ventilation openings on the sides of the body also help cool the electronics, which is useful in a device that stays plugged in for the entire journey. Tempered glass is more scratch-resistant than a plastic surface, which pays off mainly where the USB port is located in a storage compartment and the adapter comes into contact with keys or a phone.

Firmware updates via a web interface

The adapter's firmware is updated through a web interface at 192.168.18.9. Just connect your phone or computer to the adapter's WiFi network and open the address in a browser. There is no need to download a separate app or connect the adapter to a computer by cable. That matters most with newer car models, where an update can resolve partial compatibility issues or problems with full functionality. After changing cars, it is therefore worth checking first whether newer firmware is available.

USB-A connector and power from the car's port

The adapter connects to the car with a USB-A connector and is powered directly from the USB port, so neither a separate cable nor a 12 V socket is needed. A charging-only port is not enough, however, because a data connection to the car's infotainment system is required. In cars where the port intended for CarPlay or Android Auto is USB-C, the adapter connects via the USB-A to USB-C converter included in the package.

Compact dimensions and operating temperature

The adapter measures 23 x 23 x 23 mm and weighs 10.7 g, so it takes up minimal space around the USB port and puts no mechanical strain on it. The adapter's operating temperature is -20 °C to 40 °C. After a longer period parked in direct sunlight, when the cabin temperature exceeds this limit, it is therefore advisable to air the interior before setting off.

Frequently asked questions

Your most common questions.

Will the CR2 work in my car?

Yes, if the car has factory wired Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, which typically means models with this equipment from roughly 2015 onwards. The CR2 turns the wired connection into a wireless one. If the car has neither CarPlay nor Android Auto, the adapter cannot add them.

How is the CR2 connected?

You plug it into the USB port you have been using to connect your phone by cable, and it is powered directly from that port. It connects with a USB-A connector, and for a USB-C port the package includes a USB-A to USB-C converter. Neither a modification to the car's electronics nor an app installation is needed.

Does it work with both iPhone and Android?

Yes. It works with an iPhone 6 or newer running iOS 10 or higher, and with phones running Android 12 or higher, such as Google Pixel, Samsung Galaxy, LG or OnePlus.

Do I have to pair my phone on every journey?

No. The phone pairs with the adapter over Bluetooth only the first time, and after that the adapter connects on its own every time you start the engine; just keep both WiFi and Bluetooth switched on in your phone. The fact that Bluetooth disconnects after pairing and that picture and sound run over the adapter's WiFi network is normal behaviour, not a fault.
